Distance Estimators with Sublogarithmic Number of Queries

چکیده

A distance estimator is a code together with a randomized algorithm. The algorithm approximates the distance of any word from the code by making a small number of queries to the word. One such example is the Reed-Muller code equipped with an appropriate algorithm. It has polynomial length, polylogarithmic alphabet size, and polylogarithmic number of queries. In our work we present two results. First, we construct a distance estimator with arbitrary small alphabet size, polynomial length, and polylogarithmic number of queries. Second, we construct a distance estimator with sublogarithmic number of queries, almost linear length, and polylogarithmic alphabet size. Distance estimators are the coding theoretical analog of two-query low-error PCP. A recent work by Moshkovitz and Raz [FOCS’08] established two-query low-error PCP for the first time. In this work we examine whether we can construct a distance estimator via the new technique for PCP. Perhaps surprisingly, the new technique illuminates the difference between codes and PCP; there is an inherent problem with using the technique in the same way that was done for PCP. However, as we see in this work, the technique can be used to construct a distance estimator (up to a point). To prove our results, we develop a general scheme for showing that a combinatorial operation preserves the distance estimator property. ∗[email protected]. Calibration Weighting to Compensate for Extreme Values, Non-response and Non-coverage in Labor Force Survey

Frame imperfection, non-response and unequal selection probabilities always affect survey results. In order to compensate for the effects of these problems, Devill and Särndal (1992) introduced a family of estimators called calibration estimators. In these estimators we look for weights that have minimum distance with design weights based on a distance function and satisfy calibration equa...

Fr{'e}chet and Hausdorff Queries on $x$-Monotone Trajectories

vspace{0.2cm}In this paper, we design a data structure for the following problem. Let $pi$ be an $x$-monotone trajectory with $n$ vertices in the plane and $epsilon >0$. We show how to preprocess $pi$ and $epsilon$ into a data structure such that for any horizontal query segment $Q$ in the plane, one can quickly determine the minimal continuous fraction of $pi$ whose Fr{'e}chet and Hausdo...

مدل جدیدی برای جستجوی عبارت بر اساس کمینه جابه‌جایی وزن‌دار

Finding high-quality web pages is one of the most important tasks of search engines. The relevance between the documents found and the query searched depends on the user observation and increases the complexity of ranking algorithms. The other issue is that users often explore just the first 10 to 20 results while millions of pages related to a query may exist. So search engines have to use sui...

Study on the effect of forest stand distribution pattern on results of different estimators of the nearest individual distance method

The Nearest Individual Sampling Method is one of the distance sampling methods for estimating density, canopy cover and height of forest stands. Some distance sampling methods have more than one density estimator that may be skewed to the spatial pattern. Unless the stands of the trees under study have a random spatial pattern. Therefore, the purpose of this study was evaluating the effect of s...

How to Estimate Change from Samples

Measurements, snapshots of a system, traffic matrices, and activity logs are typically collected repeatedly. Difference queries are then used to detect and localize changes for anomaly detection, monitoring, and planning. When the data is sampled, as is often done to meet resource constraints, queries are processed over the sampled data. We are not aware, however, of previously known estimators...
